Breathwork FAQs

Everything you need to know before booking so you can get the most out of a session at The Stretch Space.

Breathwork

Why should I do breathwork? Haven't I been breathing my entire life?

Our breathing is automatic (thankfully!) and doesn't require our conscious effort to maintain. The automatic breath works well at keeping us alive but is usually not optimal for thriving in life. As babies we had a natural and effortless breath but over the years we accumulate life experiences that can alter our breath pattern. When we breathe in a fast paced shallow way we do not fully oxygenate our tissues and our diaphragm and breathing muscles lose strength and function just as any other muscles does. Deep functional breathing creates a lot of movement that has a gentle massaging effect on our organs. By retraining our breathing patterns we obtain a wide range of benefits that can go beyond the physical.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in. Avoid anything tight around the waist or neck or anywhere that may restrict breathing. Bring layers incase your temperature changes during the session.

What kind of breathing will we do?

We have training in a wide variety of breathwork techniques including Wim Hof Method, Conscious Connected Breath and The Essential Breath. Depending on the client and the situation we will utilize the technique(s) we think will be the most helpful. Some breathwork can be intense and fiery, while others can be very soothing and gentle.

What can I expect?

The sessions are usually done laying down or sometimes seated. Deep breathing can have a wide range of effects depending on the intensity of the breathing session and many other factors.  As we alter levels of Oxygen our circulation can change. We may feel a shift in temperature so it is helpful to bring a removable layer. Tingling sometimes occurs. We may feel light headed or loose in the body. Emotions can surface as we go deep within our selves and remove ourselves from the every day distractions of life.  You may feel some clarity or euphoria after or you may not. It is recommended to keep an open mind and focus on the process rather than end results so you can be fully present within your body.
